If you're just setting up a new Windows 2000 or XP machine, don't forget to install critical updates that will prevent you from getting infected with viruses such as Blaster or Sasser...
The RPC exploit and LSASS vulnerability must be patched immediately following a fresh install, or your chances of infection are extremely high.
The RPC exploit is currently being used by such viruses as Blaster, Welchia, Nachia, Lovsan, Posa, Dinkdink, Bolgi, Agobot, Raleka, Kibuv, Francette, Dinfor, Donk, etc. Read Microsoft article MS03-039, and download the security update KB824146.
The LSASS vulnerability is currently being used by such viruses as Sasser, Bobax, Korgo, Cycle, Kobot, Kibuv, Plexus, Rbot, etc. Read Microsoft article MS04-011 and download the security update KB835732. This update addresses multiple security issues.
These updates also apply to NT 4.0 Server and Workstation if you are still running this on your network!
Besides these patches for LSASS and RPC, make sure to download and install the latest Service Pack. It is also best practice to run a personal firewall software (especially on laptops and home computers) to stop incoming attacks from other infected computers.
