Malware Threats Triangle

The theory behind the Malware Threats Triangle is that there are three primary Internet security risks classified as Malware: Spam, Viruses, and Spyware. The characteristics of each primary risk combine to form secondary risks (blended threats).

Spam + Viruses = Worms
Spam + Spyware = Phishing/Adware
Viruses + Spyware = Trojans/Zombies

Each three risk grouping is handled by a solution.

Although phishing scams and adware share the same components of a blended threat, they are in fact polar opposites. Phishing uses spam to gather information about the user. Adware uses gathered information to spam the user with advertisements.
